In the world of bridges, I don't suppose the Itchen Bridge is anything particularly amazing - after all, it's just a concrete bridge across a river. But for Southampton it's a landmark, a vital transport link and is rich in local history - through the story of the bridge itself, the floating bridge before it, and the area around it. Right next to the bridge you will still see the last remaining section of the Vosper Thorneycroft shipyard, the slipways for the old floating bridge and for the hovercraft service - and the site for the Supermarine factory, birthplace of the Schneider Trophy winning S.5, S.6 & S.6B... and of course the Spitfire. Today, the Itchen Bridge finds itself in the middle of two of the quickest developing areas of Southampton: Woolston to the east, and Chapel - next door to the Friends Provident St Mary's Stadium - to the west. This website in concerned with the bridge and its locality over the past 200 years - and if you're at a loose end, we'll even help you to build your own model of the Itchen Bridge! |
